The Graduate

I think Rockwell chose to place the "graduate" in front of a newspaper, because he wanted to show the problems the country was going though at that time and how scary the world must be for this graduate. The headlines reveal conflict with Russia during the Cold War, and the unease in the country at that time. With the graduate's posture and attitude, Rockwell is suggesting that he is scared, and unsure about his future. I feel sorry for the young man because you can tell he doesn't feel ready to be out in the "real world," and scared like most of the world about their future.

I really like how you compared how scary the world is with the newspaper and how scared the graduate must feel for having to go out in the real world.

Suprisingly I didn't think of it that way. Good point. I couldn't definitely tell he was confused, but many people are when they graduate.

I agree that schooling in the early 1960's did not prepare their students for all of the problems that were going on the world. I'm glad you pointed out the script though, you make a very good point. I did not even notice that when I first looked at the picture.

I totally get what your saying. Everyone always told me that school prepares you for the real world and in this picture it seems like maybe he really isnt ready!

I like the way you described the painting. I never thought of it that way.
